From rope jumping for fun for kids at play, or as part of a serious fitness program or cross-training component for all sports and dance right up to international competitions, BC Sports Programs is a recognized leader for teaching all styles of rope jumping.
Since 1984, Bill Chong has been inspiring, motivating, and educating children, adults, families, teachers, coaches, athletes, community groups and fitness centres about all of the unlimited opportunities, fun challenges and benefits that this fantastic sport has to offer.
As a founder, pioneer, accomplished athlete (national freestyle and world power jumping champion, North American endurance rope jumping record holder since 1994 to present – 12,496 jumps in one hour) and coach of many national and world champions, Bill can help you with any question you may have about the sport, the services we offer, equipment, and how we can help design a program that meets your specific needs!
Rope jumping styles we teach
At BC Sports Programs, we teach all styles of rope jumping as a multi-sport physical activity which promotes a healthy active lifestyle, wellness and great quality of life. We don’t stop there as we also see how the recreational and competitive aspects of mastering the unlimited events and skills of the sport can promote self-esteem, respect, discipline, creativity, and personal achievement. Here is a list of of some of the rope jumping styles we teach:
- Nawatobi (Power Board Rope Jumping) – This sport is from Japan and was created by Mr. Masahide Ota, 1976 Olympic Men’s Artistic Gymnastics judge. One of Mr. Ota’s gymnasts, Mr. Junichi Kitagawa, introduced the sport to Bill and the York University Men’s gymnastics team in 1981 during a Canada/Japan gymnastics exchange. This style of rope jumping is performed on a “power board” that is similar to a trampoline and the goal for power board rope jumpers is to execute a routine consisting of 20 jumps using 5 different skills without any stops. The skills range in jumps that contain from 1 to up to 5-6 turns of the rope around the body in one jump mixing in 5 different arm positions. Please go to the Fédération Sportive Nawatobi Québec (FSNQ) website to see their video clips of some power board skills and amazing routines!
- Acro-Roping (Acrobatic Rope Jumping) – This sport was created by Bill Chong in 1984 after he retired from competitive gymnastics. It is a combination of acrobatic skills, gymnastics, Nawatobi and North American freestyle rope jumping.
- North American Freestyle – This style of rope jumping goes back thousands of years to the time of the ancient Egyptians, Chinese and Australian aborigines. Over the centuries, this primal jumping activity has evolved into the following modern day activities that are a ton of fun to do as a rope jumper or watch as a spectator:
○ Single Rope Freestyle
• Individual
• Pairs
• Speed
○ Double DutchPower
○ Rope Jumping (Speed, Double and Triple Unders)
○ Long Rope Group
○ Precision Props (Skip stick, pogo ball, Hop ball, Super Long Rope, etc.) - This video clip of the Jump Rope Team - Hungary's Best Rope Skipping Team provides you with a snapshot of all of the above events!
School lunch-hour and after school programs
We provide children and youth ages 7-12 with opportunities in a wide range of rope jumping activities that influence healthy, active lifestyle choices, positive social interaction and individual development through sport and play during school hours so busy parents do not have to worry about planning and organizing extra-curricular activities in the evenings and can spend this time with their families instead.
Rope jumping sessions are usually 8 weeks in length and run from 12:00-12:45 or 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. at lunch-time and 3:00-4:00 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for after-school programs depending on the school board, daycare and community-based organizations
Recreational programs
We provide rope jumping recreation programs to children aged 7 to 12 that commit to the HIGH FIVE® standard and Gymnastics Canada Respect Group for all of our children’s programs in the sport and recreation industry. The program provides children with the opportunity to maintain or improve their physical fitness, physical literacy and overall health. Here is the rope jumping recreational rope jumping program we offer through the City of Ottawa, the Dovercourt Recreation Centre and other community-based organizations:
- Rope Jumping - Taught by Bill Chong, rope skipping is a great workout and a ton of fun! This novice to grandmaster level 8-week program includes stickers, certificates and a Family Fun Day for your child to show off their new talents!
NOTE
Due to low registration numbers, this program may not be offered for either the fall, winter or spring sessions. Please be sure to check the City of Ottawa and Dovercourt websites in September, January and April to see if a session is being offered or not.

It is extremely popular in Quebec schools, so check out this French article to find out why Nawatobi rope jumping is so popular in Quebec – Et Voici Le Nawatobi - La Presse.
It does not cost much to jump rope, so if you would like to get a jump rope program going in your school, please contact us!
Ottawa Acro-Ropers Competitive and Demo Team
The Ottawa Acro-Ropers was established in 1989 as a demonstration and competitive acrobatic rope-jumping team and is the only club of its kind in Canada’s Capital Region.
The team has performed their spectacular rope jumping routines on CBC’s nationally televised Canada Day festivities on Parliament Hill, the Central Canada Exhibition and many schools across Canada and the United States. In October 1997, we visited Cuba to introduce the sport of Acro-Roping to Cuba’s Ministry of Education and Ministry for Sport. Some of our members attended the All-Japan Open Nawatobi Championships in Joetsu, Japan, in August 1998, as well as competitions and workshops in Hungary and the Netherlands in November 1999. Provincial, national and international individual and team titles have been earned over years and as recently as this past August 5, 2017. In addition to these accolades, the North American endurance record has been held by founder and head coach Bill Chong since 1994 for successfully performing over 12,496 jumps in one hour! We have actively supported the City of Ottawa’s “Girls in Sports”, Lighthouse, and recreational rope jumping programs. We have developed new teams, performed charity work, and established the first “school league” rope jumping program in the National Capitol Region.
Membership with the Ottawa Acro-Ropers is strictly by audition only. If you would like to learn acrobatic rope jumping while participating in a competitive program, you have the chance to register for our auditions! Originally from Japan, this sport is growing in popularity. The fun skills require coordination, concentration, flexibility and are fantastic at developing the cardio-vascular system. Team members learn to go beyond their limits, to want to better themselves while working as part of a team in a very fun atmosphere. For 2018-2019, we are looking for additional team members to join either the Ottawa Acro-Ropers West or Ottawa Acro-Ropers East teams.
For more information regarding auditioning for our program, please contact us!
